Dr. Sophie Withaeckx holds master degrees in African Languages and Cultures (UGent, 2001) and in International Politics (UA, 2003) and a doctoral degree in Philosophy and Moral Sciences (VUB, 2014). Her doctoral thesis Honour, gender and violence in a context of migration: An empirical-ethical research on experiences with and meanings of honour and honour-related violence, with Flanders as case-study focused on the moral dilemmas arising from the perceived incompatibility of the moral imperative to respect and protect ethnic minorities in Western nation states, with feminist goals safeguarding women’s rights. She currently works as a lecturer and researcher at VUB (research centers ETHU and RHEA) and Odisee University College. Research interests include gender and violence; harmful cultural practices; migration and minoritization; transnationalism, transmigration and social work ethics and practice.
