Julia Maria Mönig
Biography
Julia Maria Mönig is a research assistant at Stuttgart Media University, Germany, in a project on the ethical and social implications of autonomous driving. She is also a volunteer scientific researcher at VUB, where she is a member of ETHU and affiliated with the multidisciplinary Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society (LSTS). Dr. Mönig holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Passau, Germany, and a master's degree (1. Staatsexamen) in Philosophy, French and Educational Sciences from the University of Wuppertal, Germany. In her doctoral thesis Vom 'oikos' zum Cyberspace. Das Private in der politischen Philosophie Hannah Arendts she showed the different notions of privacy in Hannah Arendt's works. Applying Arendt's claim to judge by examples to prevent 'what never ought have happened' from happening again, the thesis draws onto current privacy issues as cybermobbing, behavioral advertising and secret services to explain the value of privacy for a democratic society and its individuals. At VUB she worked on her postdoctoral research project 'The luxury of leading a private life — a privilege for the lucky few?' Her research fields include ethics of technology, privacy research, exile, Hannah Arendt, philosophy of education, political philosophy, 20th century philosophy.
